Portion sizes and pricing swing widely across this group, from a $10 lunch bowl to a multi-course tasting menu at an upscale sushi counter, so checking recent reviews and photos is more useful than the price range alone. In Chicago, dinner reservations for popular izakaya, hot pot and Korean BBQ spots fill up on Friday and Saturday nights, so booking ahead or arriving at opening is worth it. Many restaurants across Illinois run daily lunch specials on weekdays that are not listed on the dinner menu, so it is worth asking. Halal, vegetarian and gluten-free options vary a lot by kitchen; call ahead if you have a dietary restriction rather than assuming the menu will note it.
The business lists hours on 6 days of the week. The most common schedule is 6β9:30 pm. It is closed on Monday. As with most places, expect changes around holidays; the phone number below is the fastest way to confirm. No phone number is listed for this business, so the Google Maps link on this page is the best route for directions and any contact details Google has on file. A really special experience. Food was top notch quality, and the attention to detail (rice, vinegar, cut, etc.) did not go unnoticed. It's hard to go wrong with courses like A5 Wagyu, Toro and Hokkaido Uni, but the subtleties and expertise were really seen in the much harder in the more humble courses like the lean tuna, Aji and hotate (super sweet and well cut, enhanced well by the accompaniment without overwhelming). Comfortable space and relaxed pace. You felt like family, the chef described everything well and also shared personal experiences in the industry and answered questions. You also felt a kinship with the other patrons at the sushi bar as well. Pace was perfect, never felt like you were begging for the next course, nor was it rushed. Can't wait to go back.

My girlfriend and I love sushi & this was the best weβve had, period. We were welcomed and served a quite filling course of the freshest fish in various styles both traditional and designed by the very skilled chef. It was an incredibly enjoyable experience hearing about the sourcing and methods of all the nigiri & maki preparation, but above all it was absolutely delicious the whole way through. Highlight of the course for me was the A5 Wagyu nigiri and my girlfriend adored the King Salmon nigiri. Thank you to our chef for this wonderful experience!! Also, GORGEOUS ambiance. It looks like an abandoned storefront from the entrance but itβs an entirely different story once you go in.

A very accessible offshoot of the flagship next door, in the sense of being at a very reasonable price point, and I'd say the course leans to the safe side with selection of fish, curing, etc. Like even if you haven't done omakase before, you could jump in here and you'll probably enjoy everything. Very nigiri-centric omakase course, and the sushi is well executed. It's nice that the chef engages the customers on preference for how much rice and wasabi. Cool to see the stylistic choice on thick-cut fish with some decorative knife work. Atmosphere is low key, comfortable, chill; not too formal, not too casual. Personal preference, I would have loved a piece or two with some stronger flavors, but that doesn't take away from an enjoyable experience.

The sushi is delicious - fish is fresh and served in generous portions. Itβs not complicated or pretentious but itβs really good. Straightforward solid omakase. What really made our experience was Chef Mugi - he was so friendly and made us feel like we were having dinner at home with a friend.

Ive been to 3 Omakases one of which was in Japan. All were really really great but Kyoten Next Door was phenomenal. I not only left full (rarity for me π«π») but each course was unexplainably good and chef Jorge was funny, kind, and knowledgeable! Edit: the food was so good I had to go back with my friends. The new chef (Chef Mugi) is also just as kind, funny and humble. We had a very enjoyable time with him as well and the food was just as delicious! We did 2 bottle services and it was so good highly recommend doing some as well if you go canβt go wrong with choices and feel free to ask the host for recommendations. Definitely worth the money for the service and food you get. Finding the location was iffy at first because thereβs no signs or anything and it looks like itβs abandoned but once you get in itβs super super nice and cozy. Will be going back for sure!
